CURTIS FREITAG

Curtis Freitag, 78, of Fredericksburg died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013.

Funeral services were held Friday, Aug. 9, at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Fredericksburg Funeral Home with Minister Harvey Hengst officiating.

Graveside service and interment followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery Mausoleum.

Visitation was held at the funeral home on Thursday evening, Aug. 8.

Freitag was born in Fredericksburg on Jan. 15, 1935, to Emil Herman Freitag and Lena Hulda Weber Freitag. He married Edith Ann Miller on Nov. 10, 1956, in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, and she survives.

Freitag’s parents operated a service station and grocery store. His father died when he was three, and his mother later married Paul Bergmann and Freitag gained two step-sisters, Lena and Laura.

He attended Pedernales School and later Fredericksburg. He installed windows in the Deluxe Motel and later worked at Behrends Garage, a Studebaker dealership at the time and the only wrecker service in town.

He moved to San Antonio and worked at a service station there before returning to Fredericksburg and working at a Texaco station at night and for Lester Knaupp doing auto body work during the day. He ended up going back to Behrends Garage where he bought his first Studebaker, and over the years became known as “The Studebaker Man.” He and his wife attended Studebaker conventions all over the United States.

For many years, he ran his own paint and body shop, wrecker service and trailer sales. He spent his last years working at the Fredericksburg Fina stations and helping his wife, who cooked at Fredericksburg Elementary School and Knopp Nursing Home No. 1.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Debbie Freitag, and a daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Jim Bob Schladoer, all of Fredericksburg.

Memorials may be made to the Hill Country SPCA, Hill Country Memorial Hospice, American Cancer Society or the charity of choice.

Pallbearers were Jim Bob Schladoer, Rhett Schladoer, Tim Clifton, Jerry Gold, David Jung and Mark Loeffler.

Honorary pallbearers were Karl Ritter, Leroy Holdforth, Gerald Howard, Mike Howard and Eddie Buch.
