Susan Marie Spangenberg, 37, of Austin and formerly of Fredericksburg, died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013.

A memorial service was held Saturday, Dec. 21, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Schaetter Funeral Home.

Private disposition of the cremains is planned at a later date.

Ronald Raoul Reese

RONALD REESE

Ronald Raoul Reese, 79, of Fredericksburg, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2013.

A funeral mass was celebrated Thursday, Dec. 19, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Msgr. Enda McKenna officiating.

Arrangements and cremation were under the direction of Fredericksburg Funeral Home.

Reese was born July 31, 1934, in Houston, the son of John Goodwin Reese and Lucille DelHomme Reese. He married Sarah Huber on June 27, 1959, and she survives.

In addition to his wife, Reese is survived by four daughters, three sons and spouses, including Celeste Reese of Austin; Laura and Randy Carle, Missouri City; Sherri Angels, Burnet; Ron and Diana Reese, Texarkana, Ark.; Joe Reese, Pearland; Pauline and Bill Herbert, Marble Falls, and John and Courtney Reese, Arlington.

Survivors also include 17 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Reese was preceded in death by his parents, and a son, Aaron Reese.

Memorials may be made to Dell Children’s Hospital, 4900 Mueller Blvd., Austin, TX 78723 or to the charity of choice.

Billy Milton Ray

BILLY MILTON RAY

Billy Milton Ray, 93, of Fredericksburg, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2013, at Hill Country Memorial Hospital.

Graveside services and interment were held Wednesday, Dec. 18, at 10 a.m. at Greenwood Cemetery with the Rev. Nathan C. Aviles officiating.

Arrangements were under the direction of Schaetter Funeral Home.

Ray was born March 1, 1920, in Shreveport, La., the son of Bedford Forrest Ray and Johnie Pearl Burke Ray. He married Elizabeth Wilson. They later divorced.

He then married Ann (Jane) Buckwalter Dancy. They were married for 40 years until her death in 2005.

A graduate of Louisiana Tech University with a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering, Ray received his master of science degree from the University of Pittsburg where he also taught for three years.

Ray spent his career in engineering, including seven years managing a nuclear weapons test program at the Naval Ammunition Depot in Lualualei, Hawaii.

He also spent 12 years at the Sandia Laboratories in Albuquerque, N.M., also in nuclear weapons testing. 

Survivors include one son, David M. Ray of Albuquerque, N.M.; a daughter, Judith D. Keener of Lithia Springs, Ga.;  and four step-daughters, including Margaret (Peggy) Dancy,  a missionary in Mozambique, Africa; Susan Unthank, Albuquerque, N.M.; Connie Fitzgerald, Gilbert, Ariz., and Sally Vanek.

Memorials may be made to the charity of choice.

JUANITA MONREAL

Juanita Monreal, 93, nee Benavides, of Fredericksburg, died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2013.

A funeral mass was celebrated Thursday, Dec. 19, at 1 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Msgr. Enda McKenna officiating.

Interment followed at Greenwood Cemetery.

Arrangements were under the direction of Schaetter Funeral Home where visitation and a rosary service led by Deacon Francisco de la Torre, were held Wednesday evening, Dec. 18.

Mrs. Monreal was born March 8, 1920, in Laredo, the daughter of Sebastian Benavides and Julia Rendon Benavides. Her husband, Domingo Monreal, preceded her in death.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Alicia and Roger Trinkle of Fredericksburg.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Monreal was preceded in death by a brother, Sebastian Benavides and a sister, Ernestina Castillo.

Memorials may be made to the Hill Country Hospice or Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.

Pallbearers included Clem Castillo, Roger Trinkle, Romeo Rendon, Paul Castillo, Raymond Castillo and Sebastian Castillo.

Leonard Philip Lott, 90, of Fredericksburg, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013, at Knopp Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 21, at 2 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church with interment following at Greenwood Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Sageser-Haas Post 650, American Legion of Harper; Zion Lutheran Church; Hill Country Memorial Hospice, or to the charity of choice.

Gerda Lehmann Kothmann

Gerda Mathilde Lehmann Kothmann, 94, of Mason, died Monday, Dec. 16, 2013, at Concho Health and Rehabilitation Center in Eden.

Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 20, at 2 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Mason with the Rev. Tim Scheffel officiating. Dreu Bearden was the organist and Carolyn Loeffler, the vocalist.

Interment followed at Gooch Cemetery.

Mrs. Kothmann was born Oct. 30, 1919, in Gillespie County, the daughter of William Lehmann and Rebecka Rode Lehmann. She married Lansing Kothmann on Aug. 22, 1940, at Christ Lutheran Church at Cherry Spring. He preceded her in death.

She was raised in the Loyal Valley community of Mason County and attended the Loyal Valley School through the eighth grade.

For 30 years, she was employed at Mason Auction Co.

Mrs. Kothmann is survived by one daughter, one son and spouses, Betty and Leon Thane of San Angelo and Lester and Cindy Kothmann of Mason.

Survivors also include four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and a sister, Esther Lehmann of Fredericksburg.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Kothmann was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Ann Kothmann; two half-brothers, Maurice Lehmann and Gus Lehmann, and two half-sisters, Alma Ziriax and Agusta Hofmann.

Memorials may be made to Young Life, St. Paul Lutheran Church in Mason or Christ Lutheran Church at Cherry Spring.

Pallbearers included Scott Hofmann, Bruce Lehmberg, Alan Kothmann, Lee Kothmann, David Reitz, Joseph Thane, Pat Ziriax and Tim Ziriax.

Mason Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Ricky Wayne Jung

Ricky Wayne Jung, 51, of Mesquite, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013, at Methodist Charlton Medical Center in Dallas.

Visitation was held Thursday, Dec. 19, from 4-6 p.m. at West-Hurtt Funeral Home in DeSoto.

Jung, a 1981 graduate of Fredericksburg High School, was born June 6, 1962, in Fredericksburg. His wife, Laurie, survives.

In addition to his wife, Jung is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Csilla Jung, and a daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Benjamin Aamoth; two grandchildren, and two sisters, Thersea Taylor and Yvonne Jung.

Ruby Pearl Achinelli

RUBY ACHINELLI

Ruby Pearl Achinelli, 86, nee Rossberg, of Fredericksburg, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2013.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 17, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Fredericksburg Funeral Home with the Rev. David Priem officiating.

Interment followed at Greenwood Cemetery.

Visitation was held Monday evening, Dec. 16, at the funeral chapel.

Mrs. Achinelli was born Aug. 23, 1927, in Donna, the daughter of A.C. Rossberg and Reba Virginia Smith Rossberg. She married Erwin Friedrich on March 14, 1943, and they moved to the Friedrich ranch near Doss.

After his death, she married Charles Achinelli in 1979, and he survives.

She attended school at Bennett Country School in Llano County.

For many years, Mrs. Achinelli owned and operated the Palace Theater and the Fredericksburg Drive-In.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Achinelli is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Doug Prade of New Braunfels; a daughter-in-law, Clairlean Friedrich of Llano; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren, and a sister, Penny Turrentine of Goldthwaite.

Along with her parents and first husband, Mrs. Achinelli was preceded in death by a son, Ronald (Ricky) Friedrich, and two brothers, A.S. Rossberg and Billy Gene Rossberg.

Memorials may be made to Hill Country Memorial Hospice, Holy Ghost Lutheran Church or to the charity of choice.

Pallbearers included Daryl Friedrich, Kevin Prade, Taylor Tomlinson, Tyler Tomlinson, T.J. Tomlinson and Reagan Friedrich.

Mrs. Victor G. Sagebiel, 93, nee Eleanora (Nola) Loth of Fredericksburg and formerly of Willow City, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013, at Knopp Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Visitation will be held Thursday, Dec. 26, from 5-7 p.m., and Friday, Dec. 27, from 7:30-9:45 a.m., in the chapel of Schaetter Funeral Home.

A vigil and rosary service will be held Thursday, Dec. 26, at 6 p.m., at Schaetter Funeral Home.

A funeral mass will be celebrated Friday, Dec. 27, at 10 a.m., at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with interment following in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.

RUBY THOMPSON

Ruby Thompson, 84, nee Hawks, of Fredericksburg, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013.

No services are planned at this time.

Arrangements and cremation were under the direction of Fredericksburg Funeral Home.

Mrs. Thompson was born Dec. 21, 1929, in Mt. Airy, N.C., the daughter of G.W. Hawks and Sara Ennis Hawks. She married Roscoe Thompson on July 20, 1951, in Opa-locka, Fla., and he survives.

Mrs. Thompson and her husband moved to Fredericksburg upon his retirement.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Thompson is survived by four daughters and spouses, including Sue Neely of Rigby, Idaho; Katie and David Dickerson, Coupeville, Wash.; Charlotte and Robert Mumme, and Jo Varn, all of Fredericksburg.

Survivors also include eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and a brother, Paul Hawks of Mt. Airy, N.C.

She was preceded in death by her parents and nine siblings.

Mrs. Victor G. (Nola) Sagebiel

ELEANORA (NOLA) SAGEBIEL

Mrs. Victor G. Sagebiel, 93, nee Eleanora Mina (Nola) Loth of Fredericksburg and formerly of Willow City, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013, at Knopp Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

A funeral mass was celebrated Friday, Dec. 27, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Msgr. Enda McKenna officiating. Mary Ann Murchison was the pianist, and Tricia Eilers, the vocalist.

Interment followed at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.

Arrangements were under the direction of Schaetter Funeral Home where visitation was held Thursday evening, Dec. 26, and Friday morning, Dec. 27.

Mrs. Sagebiel was born Feb. 5, 1920, in Gillespie County, the daughter of Joseph A. Loth and Laura O. Zenner Loth. She married Victor Gilbert Sagebiel on Jan. 2, 1940, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He preceded her in death on May 13, 1974.

A member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Mrs. Sagebiel was a charter member of St. Ann’s Society and was a member for over 50 years.

She was also a member of the Willow City Homemakers Club, was named Outstanding Homemaker of the Year in 1956, was active in the Willow City 4-H Club and the Willow City School.

For many years, she worked with the Easter Fires Pageant, volunteered at the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store, and worked as a cashier for several local restaurants, retiring at the age of 85 years.

Mrs. Sagebiel is survived by two sons, two daughters and spouses, including Joe A. and Madeline Sagebiel and Mike and Peggy Sagebiel, all of Fredericksburg; Priscilla Gill, Houston, and Kathy and Richard Strickland, Willow City.

Survivors also include six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, a brother-in-law, Desmond Sagebiel of Willow City, and a sister-in-law and spouse, Ethel and Willie Willmann of Mason.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Sagebiel was preceded in death by her step-father, Adolph Ressmann; a son, Randolph (Randy) Sagebiel, and a sister, Helen Clara, Mrs. Alfred (Shorty) Klafka.

Memorials may be made to New Horizons, St. Mary’s Parish Capital Campaign, Willow City Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department or to the charity of choice.

Pallbearers included Dexter Sagebiel, Eric Sagebiel, Robert Sagebiel, Richard Strickland, Butch Welgehausen and Don Wise.

Honorary pallbearers were Sherry Sagebiel, Wendy Gill, Misty Smith, Woody Strickland, Ashley Davis, Ava Sagebiel, Monty Sagebiel, Dannaca Davis, Landri Sagebiel and Reese Sagebiel.

Mrs. Ewald Rode, 96, nee Elsa Meier of Fredericksburg, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, at Knopp Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Visitation will be held Monday, Dec. 30, from 5:30-7:30 p.m., and Tuesday, Dec. 31, from 7:30-9:30 a.m., at Schaetter Funeral Home, and on Tuesday, Dec. 31, from 10-11 a.m., at Bethany Lutheran Church.

Leonard Philip Lott

LEONARD LOTT

Leonard Philip Lott, 90, of Fredericksburg, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013, at Knopp Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 21, at 2 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church with the Rev. Rick Hartmann officiating.

Graveside services with military honors and interment followed at Greenwood Cemetery.

Arrangements were under the direction of Schaetter Funeral Home where visitation was held Friday evening, Dec. 20, and Saturday morning, Dec. 21.

Lott was born Jan. 26, 1923, in Kerr County, the son of Hilmar Lott and Pauline Jung Lott. He married Olivia Bernhard on Sept. 18, 1955 at Zion Lutheran Church. She preceded him in death in 1986.

He married Wanda Klaehn Moellendorf on Nov. 26, 1988, at St. James Lutheran Church in Harper and she survives.

A World War II veteran, Lott enlisted on Oct. 18, 1944, and served on the front lines in the Philippines. He was discharged on Sept. 13, 1949, and was a reservist until June 13, 1971.

Over the years, he worked for Usener Appliance, Hill Country Memorial Hospital and in the lumber business until his retirement.

He also served on the church council at Zion Lutheran Church.

Lott, along with other World War II veterans in the Harper area, formed the Sageser-Haas Post 650, American Legion in Harper of which he was a lifetime member. He enjoyed attending his Sixth Infantry Division reunions.

In addition to his wife, Lott is survived by one step-son, David Moellendorf of Fredericksburg; one step-daughter and spouse, Connie and Scott Schladoer of Comfort; five step-grandchildren, and five step-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Sageser-Haas Post 650 American Legion in Harper, Zion Lutheran Church, Hill Country Memorial Hospice or to the charity of choice.

Pallbearers included Joe B. Moellendorf, Patrick Moellendorf, Derek Moellendorf, Tyler Schladoer, Robert Schladoer and Vaughn Usener.

Mrs. Fred Lallier, 89, nee Alta Lee Baker of Fredericksburg, died Monday, Dec. 30, 2013, at Knopp Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Robert Chapman Mays, 79, of Fredericksburg, died Friday, Dec. 27, 2013, in an Austin hospital.

The family will receive visitors on Saturday, Jan. 11, from noon until 1 p.m., in the chapel of Schaetter Funeral Home where the funeral will begin at 1 p.m.

Interment of the cremains is planned at a later date.

Mrs. Anthony Winans, 57, nee Ruth Anne Maddy of Harper, died Monday, Dec. 30, 2013.

A memorial service and interment of her cremains will be held at a later date.

Mrs. Winans was born May 29, 1956, in Sacramento, Calif., the daughter of John Maddy and Ruth Moore Maddy. She married Anthony Winans on June 19, 1982, in San Luis Obispo, Calif., and he survives.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Winans is survived by a son, Jeremy Allen Winans of Dickenson, N.D.

MRS. EWALD RODE

Mrs. Ewald Enos Rode, 96, nee Elsa Anna Meier of Fredericksburg, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, at Knopp Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 31, at 11 a.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church with the Reverends J. Elliott Pancoast and Travis Meier officiating.

Interment followed in Greenwood Cemetery.

Arrangements were under the direction of Schaetter Funeral Home where visitation was held Monday evening, Dec. 30.

Mrs. Rode was born Jan. 14, 1917, in Gillespie County, the daughter of Heinrich (Henry) Meier and Emma Brodbeck Meier. She married Ewald Enos Rode on Dec. 10, 1944, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Stonewall. He preceded her in death on March 31, 1992.

Mrs. Rode was active with the Lydia Circle at Bethany Lutheran Church. She also sang with the Fredericksburg Chorale and the Hermann Sons Mixed Choir.

Mrs. Rode is survived by one daughter, two sons and spouses, including Barbara and Elgin L. Schneider of Cherry Spring; Luther S. and Janet Rode of Fredericksburg and James E. Rode of Kerrville.

Survivors also include seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Albert and Dora Meier of Stonewall; a sister, Margareta, Mrs. Hugo Maenius of Albert; and a sister and brother-in-law, Marie and Paul Senff of Stonewall.

Other survivors include two brothers-in-law, three sisters-in-law and spouses, including Stan Gremmer of Wisconsin; Frances Meier Klein, Fredericksburg; Martin and Ida Rode, Kerrville; Mathilde, Mrs. Ernest Lindig, Fredericksburg, and Anita, Mrs. Rupert Rode, Georgetown.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Rode was preceded in death by three brothers, Edwin Meier, Walter Meier and Alfred Meier, and two sisters, Viola, Mrs. Stan Gremmer, and Lydia, Mrs. Donald Fishel.

Memorials may be made to the Fredericksburg Chorale, Hill Country Memorial Hospice, Bethany Lutheran Church or to the charity of choice.
